Cast iron diet???
« on: February 27, 2010, 06:44:32 AM »
I saw on Dr. Oz the other day that if you cook in cast iron it increases the iron in your diet.
It is a small amount but if it's healthy I may have to get some new cookware!! :rotfl:

Just another tidbit of useless information!!

"Tis true. Back in the day, anemia was not as much an issue as it is today, especially among women.

Our kitchen has 4 sizes of CI skillets plus a griddle, 2qt. pot, stove-top DO, and a deep-fry skillet. I just finished a batch of Brunswick stew, cooked in an iron "witches' cauldron" over a oak fire in my back yard. It took 3 beers, 2 seegars and 4 hours of stirring, but it was well worth it.

Not really "useless" information.  Growing up, there was always an iron skillet with bacon grease in it that my Dad cooked eggs in every morning.  He stored it in the oven and more than once, I almost caught the house on fire because I would forget it was in there and cut on the oven to preheat!  :atomic:

When I started building my cast iron collection, my dad gave me his father's cast iron "fried chicken pan."  Cast iron lasts forever!

nothing beats a good"sunrise surprise" as I call it....take all the leftover veggies from the week before...toss them in a freezer bag, cut a few strips of bacon in small pieces, and some sausage, crack open a couple eggs...close bag, shake for 30 secs and pour in skillet over the campfire....ahhhhh

it camping time yet?

For those newbies to cast iron, that's a deep-walled skillet. The high sides keep the spatters down.
